1. Introduction

SCAN TO FILE (S2F) is a Windows utility program developed by Dunord to scan documents, and save on disk compressed bi-tonal images in TIFF G3 or G4 file format, or uncompressed gray images. S2F will work with all Dunord Scanner Interfaces and supported scanners. It will let you scan documents in simplex (one side) or duplex (two sides), depending on your scanner. It will also allow you to change scanner parameters like resolution, document size, or any other feature supported by the scanner. With S2F, you will be able to scan one, or a series of documents. Each document will be put in a different disk file. You indicate the name of the first file and S2F automatically increments file name to store successive documents. If your scanner supports gray level imaging, S2F will display the scanned images in gray levels.

2. Installing S2F

S2F can be found on the drivers diskette included with every scanner interface shipped by Dunord Technologies.

System Requirements

Minimal system requirements to run S2F are as follows:

Refer to your scanner interface user's guide for installation procedure of the interface and memory requirements.

Installation Procedure

S2F can be installed by executing the following steps:

C:\DUNORD\S2F.EXE

The installation procedure is now complete.

3. Running S2F

To start S2F, power on your scanner and make sure that it is warmed up. Double-click on the S2F icon. S2F will display the following window:

S2F offers many options to control your scanner and scanning environment. They are described in the following paragraphs. Only the options supported by the attached scanner will be displayed and available (for example, if your scanner does not support 400 dpi resolution, 400 will not be displayed in the list of available resolutions). Scanned images are displayed on a pixel per pixel basis. Since screen resolution is usually lower than scanner resolution, only part of a scanned letter-sized document can be displayed at any one moment. Use the horizontal and vertical scroll bars to see other parts of the document. If a duplex scanner is connected to your PC and front-side and back-side scanning is enabled, S2F will display the front and the back page in succession every time you scan.

3.1 Menu items

File ° About
Displays a window showing Version number, Copyright information and the type of scanner detected.

File ° Load scan template
Displays a Windows dialog box that lets you open a scan template. A scan template is used to keep S2F and scanner settings from one session to another. The file extension of a template file is S2F.

File ° Save scan template
Displays a Windows dialog box that lets you save current scanner settings into a scan template.

File ° Exit
Quits S2f.

Mode ° Scan and view
This is the default mode for S2F. In this mode, any scanned document is simply displayed on your screen, and no compressed image is stored to disk.

Mode ° Scan and save
When this mode is selected, S2F displays scanned documents. Bi-tonal images are compressed and written to disk in TIFF G3 or G4 format. Gray images will be written to disk in uncompressed format, be aware that these files might be extremely large. Each document is stored in a separate file if you are working in simplex mode (single side). In duplex mode (two sides), each document side is stored in a separate file; thus, each document will generate two files: one for the front side and one for the back side. When you click on Scan and save, S2F displays three additional selector boxes. The Save format box lets you choose the file compression format between TIFF G3 and TIFF G4. The Save document as box allows you to indicate the path and name of the file where the compressed image will be saved. If you want to read many documents, make sure that the file name ends with one or many digits. S2F will increment the file name by the number of the add box to generate new file names that will be used to store consecutive documents.

Scanner settings
When you click on Scanner settings, S2F displays a window that lets you change scanner settings, such as paper size, resolution or brightness. The format of this window depends on the hardware characteristics of the scanner connected to your PC. S2F will display only setting values supported by the scanner (for example, if your scanner does not support A3 or Double Letter, these two values will not be included in the list of available document sizes). S2F will also detect if any optional image enhancement circuit board has been installed on your scanner (like Fujitsu IPC II or DTC, or Bell & Howell ACE). In this case, S2F will add menu items in the Scanner Settings window to display an additional window to let you change the settings of the image enhancement circuit board. If your scanner and your Dunord interface have gray level capabilities, you will see a check box with the following legend:

256 GRAY LEVELS x

With a standard gray interface, you will not be able to clear the option. With a TwinStream interface, checking the option on and off will toggle between gray and bi-tonal images. The Defaults button will let you revert to the default settings of the connected scanner.

Scan
Starts the scan process according to the mode and options selected.

3.2 Options

From
Let you choose the source of documents for the scanner. The sources are Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or Flatbed (Bed).

Cycle
Indicates whether you want to read a single document (Single), or a pile of documents from the ADF (Continuous). If you have a duplex scanner and have enabled back side scanning, scanning a document in Continuous will generate two images, one for the front side and one for the back side. In Single mode, the first Scan command will give you the front page, while the second Scan command will give the back page.

Side
If the scanner attached to your PC can scan only in simplex (one side), this box contains the caption Front only and no options are displayed. If you have a duplex scanner attached to your PC, this box will contain options Front and Back. Front is not really an option since it cannot be turned off; this means that you cannot scan only the back side of a document. You can toggle the Back option on and off to indicate to S2F whether or not you want to scan the back side.

Save format
Shown only when Mode ° Scan and save is activated Lets you determine the compressed image file format. Two formats are available: TIFF G3 and TIFF G4.

Save document as
Shown only when Mode ° Scan and save is activated Lets you select the path and file name where compressed scanned images will be saved. S2F displays as default value file: C:\DOC00000.TIF. You can change this to any valid DOS directory and file name. In Cycle ° Continuous mode, S2F tries to increase the file name with the contents of add to store subsequent scanned images. For example, with default values, S2F will store the images in the following way: Image 1 C:\DOC00000.TIF Image 2 C:\DOC00001.TIF Image 3 C:\DOC00002.TIF , etc... Remember that duplex scanning will generate two images per document, one for the front side and one for the back side. If you decide to change the default file name, make sure that you include a numeric part on the right hand side of the file name so that S2F can add the contents of add to it to create new file names. When the maximum numeric value is reached, S2F resets it to zero. Here are some examples of file names and what S2F will do with them in Cycle ° Continuous mode: DOCUMENT.TIF S2F will try to add the contents of add to the file name since there is no numeric part to increase. S2F will use the same file name to store all scanned images, with the result that only the last scanned image will remain available. TEST0000.TIF S2F will increase file name in sequence from TEST0000.TIF to TEST9999.TIF and will cycle back to TEST0000.TIF when the maximum is reached. DOC00.TIF S2F will increase file name in sequence from DOC00.TIF to DOC99.TIF and will cycle back to DOC00.TIF when the maximum is reached.

add
Shown only when Mode ° Scan and save is activated. This is the increment that will be added to file name to generate new names. The default value is 1.
