JPEG

When grayscale or color images are scanned, their size can be huge and saving in uncompressed TIFF format can take a large amount of disk space. Also, if and when the files have to be tranferred to another computer, via a network or diskettes, it can be very cumbersome.

So, we have added JPEG support to our drivers. When proper libraries are installed and available to the driver, the JPEG option will be seen by the application and from then on, it can save gray or color images in JPEG format. Many JPEG controls are made available thru a structure and image quality and compression values can be set.

Of course, the speed is very good, usually faster than saving to an uncompressed file format.

These librairies are distributed from Pegasus Imaging Corporation. In order to use them in an application, and remove the nag message, a licence must be purchase from Dunord Technologies. Please contact us for licensing details.

Please note that with bitonal scanners, if those librairies are installed and the current version of S2Fv2 is used, it is possible to load gray or color images for viewing. But JPEG will never be available as a choice forsaving a bitonal image.

PDF

Adobe's Portable Document Format is getting more and more popular. We have thus included a mechanism to save scanned images in PDF format, directly from the driver. There is no need to go thru another process to convert from TIFF to PDF, it is all done in one pass, without a TIFF temporary file. Files that are created this way can be viewed with Adobe's Acrobat Reader v4, available free of charge from their web site at www.adobe.com.

Our PDF implementation supports bookmarks and multipage files. If the JPEG option is available, grayscale and color images can be saved. it is possible to mix bitonal, gray and color images in the same file as different pages.

Libraries

Libraries to set JPEG and/or PDF are available on this web site in the support area.

Developers who want to develop their own application using these features from our API can find documentation in the support area of this site.
